"A study of 63 female IBS patients and 34 healthy controls from Sweden used shotgun metagenomics (Eurofins Genomics) to analyze gut microbiota. Only slight differences in alpha diversity were found, but increased abundance of Streptococcus and Desulfovibrio piger in IBS, and decreased Bifidobacterium and Methanobrevibacter. Functional profiling identified 39 differentially abundant pathways, including amino acid biosynthesis upregulated in IBS and carbohydrate degradation in controls. High inter-individual variability underscores the need for larger multi-omics studies."
